We live in a very judgmental world. When we interact with others it can be hard to not worry about what they think of us. This fear of judgment however can get in the way to our own personal growth. It often can cause constant worry and negativity in our own thoughts. Holding us back from being our true selves and social interactions.
How does a fear of judgment affect us?
The most common affect of a fear of judgment is not acting ourselves. When we fear being judged we often withhold what we feel needs to be said. We gear our conversations, what we wear, how we act, based on what we think others will like. When we do this and we do not act ourselves we can become overwhelmed with guilt, anger and sadness.
How do we overcome a fear of judgment?
Know your own strengths and weaknesses
When your confident in your own abilities it can be easier to ignore judgment from others. Especially when they feel you’re incapable of something. Do not let their statements and judgment waiver your confidence in yourself.
Define yourself only on who you are. Don’t let others define you.
When we define ourselves solely on those around us, I’m his wife, her mother, his girlfriend, his sister, we can lose who we feel we are. This is especially true when dating or in a relationship. When you define yourself solely on your relationship, who do you become when/if that relationship fails? This is also true when you realize others are allowed to have their own opinion. You do not have to gear your opinion or beliefs solely on the opinions of others. My parents have very strong political beliefs I do not agree with. Just because they are my parents I do not have to agree with them and that is okay.
Ignore negative opinions of you.
Everyone judges. It’s ultimately a very negative fact of life. What does not need to happen is to speak our judgment. When we do so we are simply hurting others. However, we will always deal with people that have negative feelings about us. We cannot please everyone. Learn to ignore those that have a negative opinion of you. Surround yourself with the people that think positively of you and stay confident in your opinion of your self.
Be authentic
Be you. This includes having your opinions and your beliefs. Do not be afraid to be who you are.
