31 Days to a Positive Inner Voice: Positivity Through Mindfulness

Mindfulness is our ability to be fully aware and present where we are and what we are doing. This means not being distracted by outside forces, thoughts, and emotions. When we are constantly negative, anxious, or upset about situations we can focus on them even when out of the situation. We can be watching a movie but thinking about the kids grades or school work. Having dinner out but thinking about the bills and laundry. We can be working but focused on anxiety over a family event. Each of these situations are examples of not being mindful, fully present and aware.

Everyone has the ability to be mindful, however, some people are able to do it more naturally and without conscious thought to do so. Others, like myself have to concentrate on being in the moment rather then worrying about every other thing.

Techniques to Cultivate Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness does not mean you have to truly be meditating at any given place. What it means is staying present where you are.

  1. Pay attention to the present moment. Sit back, stand, lay down, whatever suits the situation you’re in and be present in where you are. Pay attention to what you see, hear, feel, taste and do not let your thoughts wander.
  2. Your mind will wander. Bring your thoughts back. Come back into the present moment.
  3. Shut out negativity. Stop negative thoughts in their tracks. Do not judge just be present.

Meditation and Mindfulness helps us put negative, anxious, and fearful thoughts aside at least for a short period of time. As well as meditation can help you remain productive and calm.
